Ahem

Yes, yes, in order to clear up some confusion... My duel is with the so-called Josh at Moralcalculus. Anyway... You call that a hairstyle? (Knig kignht pwan to qeuen bsiohp sveen, yuor mvoe. Rmebmer, act csaual, don't let tehm kown teh drak sceert paln.)

Oh, and on the subject of the other Josh

It would seem that we have this deathly rivalry growing between myself and the other Josh at some other blog. Therefore, the gauntlet is thrown down. To the DEATH! (Fleolw Jsoh, our paln is wronkig prfetlcy, we hvae tehm rgiht wehre we wnat tehm. Tehy'll nveer see it cmonig.) Please disregard above subtly coded message.

Links, standard blog stuff.

Let's see... in the vein of the proper blog. Current music: Firewater, Dark Days Indeed. Current mood: Sore. Hey, you lug three damn boxed shelves at over a hundred pounds each and seventy-two inches long, see how you feel. (Seventy-two inches. Imagine a chin rest for Dave, and you got it.) Got one for you on the subject of piracy, Dave. One of the most brilliant policy statements I've ever seen from a software company on the matter. http://www.joeuser.com/index.asp?AID=209 The irony is the MPAA getting upset about movie posts online. Thing is, that only costs them when they put out a crappy movie. Take Attack of the Clones... we watched it pre-release to see if we'd bother to see it in the theater. Who in their right mind would consider watching a crappy rendition of a movie via a handheld camera to be a substitute for the cinematic experience of dolby and large screen? Bah. The second link I want to post is something I think needs to be distributed far and wide, because it's an issue near and dear to my heart... traffic behavior. It gets a bit overly technical in areas, but that's how the guy chose to approach it. He's dead right, though. http://www.amasci.com/amateur/traffic/traffic1.html Other than that, lessee... went to see Underworld, which could have been MUCH better than it was. The fine art of moviemaking is dead... pretty soon they'll junk dialogue altogether and simply string effects together. That's it for the moment, perhaps I'll get philosophical later. But only if my demands aren't met.

The Baroque Cycle, music services, and I want my Maximum Bob.

In an effort to avoid getting called out for not updating, the carnage brings you the following: I can't speak for anyone else, but my lack of updates is currently being caused by the new Neal Stephenson book, Quicksilver. (http://www.baroquecycle.com/flash.htm) It is the first installlment in what looks to be an epic trilogy. I will have more on this as I make my way through the story. Apple's Music Store is finally getting some competition. Music Match now has a similar service. (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/internetprivacy/2003-09-29-music-match_x.htm) Same basic setup, $.99 a song, $9.99 for most albums, and you are allowed to burn cds with the music you buy. My issue with this is that none of these services are using MP3. WTF? It's a standard! I think we can all agree that they don't make the egghead that can stop consumers from pirating music if they want to. So, knock it off with the annoying of regular consumers in some halfassed attempt. Give people their music downloads in MP3. Not AAC, not WMA, MPF'ing3. It's not rocket science. That actually brings up another interesting thought. The success of the Apple Music Store should be lighting some bulbs above the heads of executives in Hollywood, however dim those bulbs may be. When are they going to get us reasonable fee movie and television download services? More and more ways to download movies and television keep popping up on the internet, yet nothing is done to provide a legal, revenue generating, alternative. The networks would be well served making old, no longer airing series available for download. Those shows are just sitting on a shelf not doing anything for anyone. It would be worth throwing them on a server to see if anyone wants them. The movie studios could cut out the middlemen in video rental as well. As broadband becomes more prevalent, and more people get computers that will output to their TV (i.e. Windows Media Center), the market for download, or streaming, rentals will only continue to grow. Unfortunately, I predict that once again the fear that someone may try to take advantage of the service will once again bog the development down as they try to prevent piracy. I'll save you the trouble fellas and just tell you now. Within a week of the start of the service, no matter how good your anti-piracy kung fu is, some crafty german hacker will have it defeated and the freeware crack will be readily available. So get going on the service already, I want to watch Maximum Bob and Beggars and Choosers again. I need to get back to work, so let me leave you with this cryptic, to some, thought. Wow, did I ever dig that sweater!

Watch This!

Not a lot of time to ramble here. I need to get back to work in a few minutes. I just wanted to get this up on the web before the time zones kick me in the ass again. There is a new show starting tonight that has the potential to be something special. 8PM on CBS is the premiere of Joan Of Arcadia (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/joan_of_arcadia/). Set your VCRs, PVRs, capture cards, or point a camcorder at a TV. Just give this one a shot. And congratulations to our favorite german reader Faru. We are very proud of you. Hope everyone has a great weekend. Back to work for me.

Nothing much going on around my point in space-time...

I'm sitting here having the eternal debate that a person like me tends to have around this hour... it's six-fifteen in the morning, I've been up all night, I've got things to do and people to see today... So, do I go to bed, sleep to the afternoon and then get to work? Or do I wait until eight when the stuff starts opening up and get it early? I'm leaning toward getting some sleep because some of the chores require somewhat clear-headed cogitation. It'll be an 'end of blog post' decision, I suppose. Sorry I can't contribute to the TV and movie discussion. As Dave will heartily attest, I'm hopelessly behind on pop culture, being something of a media refugee by choice and the nature of my career. If you can squeeze in the time Cathie, you really should take a whirl at our little home on the IRC. I, for one, would definitely look forward to conversing with you in real-time. I'm sure that is not an uncommon sentiment among our wee band of saints and oddballs. (Dave's the saint, I'm the oddball.) I did want to say something to Annie over at the Rubble... Annie, my precious friend, you are not a freak. From my observation of you, I could tell you that you have a lot more in common with normal people and normal teenagers than you have any idea of. Unfortunately, as one who prizes intellect and control, it's not the sort of normalcy you desire. Believe me, I know exactly how that feels. For people like us, the frustration of not being able to simply adjust our personal settings and emotional outputs can be enormously frustrating. I've always had a hard time explaining my philosophy of life. When I was younger, I was a dedicated nihilist, assured that nothing I ever did would amount to anything in the long run. I would explain this worldview to people, who would get inordinately depressed at the mere notion, and ask me how I could live like that. Then I'd smile. Because even if my world, my life, my story didn't mean a damn thing in the long run, it was very important to me. By god, every time I got banged, hammered, fell down and/or blew it in a big way, at least I was moving. I can't even explain to this day how the prospect of a hopeless fight invigorated me. Maybe just a fundamental adjustment to always being on the outcast side of the things when I was entering my teenage years, before I decided that my peers weren't worthy opponents and moved into more interesting things. If I couldn't laugh it off, I would've broken completely. I had times when I considered the whole world and everyone in it my enemy, and eventually I came to the view of 'God help the world, it's fucked now. Just you wait until I'm done with it...' Time goes by and things change. You move beyond the backbirths who cluster in academia to avoid having to work for a living, move out into the world and find true peers, people of talent, strength and intelligence. You find out that you're not nearly as alone as you thought you were, once upon a time. There are people aplenty in this world that I'm proud to stand next to, sharing the joys of life. A weird coincidence of a short-run television show that inspired a heartily fanatical fandom brought me into contact with several of them this year. That's the magic of life, that we can stand tall and do great and marvelous things, but for most mountains that we climb, we find people just like us standing around the top and looking at the next one up. I wouldn't trade this life of mine for anything, or anyone else's life. It's glorious, baby. That's MY hope for mankind... screw the past, we've got a great next million years lined up. There are a lot of people around here who love you, lady. For who and what you are, an intelligent, witty, caring woman. Even if you don't feel that you always connect and communicate as well as you desire, the message gets through. You're my precious, precious Princess. Point at the dragon and I'll have his scaly head hanging on the wall by sunset. Don't ever forget that.

Since you brought it up...

Catching up to do when it comes to Firefly Shempy? There are all manner of ways we can help you out with that. You could venture into #firefly and ask. There is usually someone there that can help you out with a DCC, myself, maguinan or HFK certainly. ICQ would be another option along the file transfer route. If your home system is bandwidth challenged, or you don't have the requisite 6+GB of space required for the full set, we can set you up with a set of CD's. Just say the word and we'll have a set flying your way at the speed of FedEx in your choice of computer friendly MPGs or DVD player friendly VCDs. I have kind of hesitated bringing up the firefly too much here, so as not to seem like we were trying to lure you into our fandom. That said, it is an amazingly good show, and I would be more than happy to help you see it. In other TV notes, the Gilmore Girls was great. I watched Jake2.0 again on your recommendation shemp, it was ok. Jake is still not working for me, but I'll check it again later in the season. Odd note, you mentioned that the lead was from Oddysee 5, which hadn't clicked for me. Did you notice that the lab tech girl was from another Showtime series, Beggars and Choosers. Funny how those things work out. I am really looking forward to next weeks premieres of Smallville and Angel. Bad Clark is really good, and the new Spike / Angel dynamic promises all sorts of fun. Did anyone else catch the promo for the Charmed premiere? Alyssa Milano in a bikini, but you also have to see that guy from Joe Millionaire. Proving once again, nothing is free. Tonight brings us the premiere of CSI, which I like, and a new What I Like About You. I guess NBC is premiering Friends, Will & Grace, and Coupling...just in case you misplaced the hammer you normally use to knock yourself unconcious. A special hello to the newest reader of the carnage. It seems that the world's greatest receptionist has finally found us. She is more of an Annie @ The Rubble fan, but who can blame her for that? Now I need to get back to work.

Movies on the Brain, and greetings once again

Howdy! Josh, thanks for the welcome, I'm amazed to hear how much Dave has talked about me, he's a Swell Guy, (After seeing SUPERMAN I always use the word Swell, and I mean swell is a good thing!) It's been fun hanging around hear and read all this other stuff going on with everyone. I wish I could come around more often myself and check out the other blogs Dave always mentions. And Dave I am so glad to hear you really enjoyed Bubba Ho Tep, I knew you would, I get to see it again in a week, and I can't wait, I'm wrangling up some of my work buds to see it too, You know me always getting people to see Bruce Movies. This past weekend I saw a lot of flicks! A lot of stuff I'd already seen but a few new ones too. The one to rave about is UNDEAD a horror movie from Australia. The main gal in the movie could fight along side Ash when it comes to slaying zombies. (that's a high compliment!!) All you need to know about UNDEAD is meteors his this small town down under and those hit by a meteor turn into zombies! For more you can check out the site http://www.undeadmovie.com/ This festival where I checked out a bunch of flicks had a few panels one with the Masters of Horror, Stuart Gordon, Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, were the masters and they also had Rob Zombie and Eli Roth (cabin fever director) they talked a lot about making movies and it was pretty cool. Stan Lee was at another panel and he of course is always fun to see and listen too. He's still working hard coming up with fun ideas. Ah I could ramble more but I've got a concert to go to tonight, I'm checking out the White Stripes, my favorite band these days! I've seen them before in concert so I know it's going to be fun. Yup! So hopefully next time I'll have more than movie talk to share, I've got catching up to do when it comes to Firefly, and Smallville is one week and one day away! I am on the edge of my seat waiting for that. Clark...he used to be the good guy! I LOVE SUPERMAN! Ok, the end for now :)

Dave weighs in, digs little freaks, and how cool is Shemp?

Since I am seeing a few entries about all the nuttiness over at fffnet, I though it would be appropriate to throw my two cents in. Josh, your post impressed me quite a bit. Well written and chock full of good points. I will be somewhat less eloquent, but I hope everyone catches my drift. As to goings on at fffnet, I have put posting on a hiatus. There are a couple reasons for this. First, I agree with what Josh and Jon have both said in their posts. Nothing good is going to come from any of it. Everyone would be better off if we all just took a break. I do still have some things I would like to say. I think some things were misunderstood, and some were misconstrued, and I would like to take a shot at explaining. Unfortunately, I don't think many people are interested in explanations at this point. So, against all normal urges, my tongue shall remain held. The other reason I have halted posting is that it seems to fuel a fire. At this point another post is just looking to have a reply posted and continue the cycle. This paragraph will just have to remain short, so as not to incite further drama. At the end of the day, the point of it all is to have fun. This junk isn't fun. So for now I will distance myself from it and concentrate on other things. There is still plenty of fun to be had. And that's about it for fffnet. I assume that if you are reading this, you are most likely reading The Rubble. If not, this won't mean much to you, but it is intended for Annie, so take it as you wish. Annie, reading the new rubble, I know exactly how you feel about Sarah. As I read your entry I had the same thoughts about you. If I was just smart enough to find the words to show you how you look through someone else's eyes. You are a remarkable young woman. I am constantly amazed by your intellect and wit. Seeing your familiar 'hey all' pop up in the chat always brightens my day, as does a new post at the Rubble. The thought of you being 'down in the dumps' frustrates me. Lacking any brilliant writing talent (obviously, right?), I can only offer you this. From one freak to another, I think you are the coolest. Whatever you think are the good and the bad parts of your particular brand of freak, they matter not to me. All I know is that they add up to the amazing girl I know as maguinan, and that is perfect as far as I can tell. So, Shempy, I made it to Bubba Ho-Tep this weekend. I have to say that it was definitely worth the wait. Now I understand what you have been raving about for months. It was such a good time. We saw it in a packed house and the whole crowd was into it right from the opening definition bit, all the way to the end. There was so much Bruce goodness. He's still got it, buckets of it actually. I think it is one of those movies that will really take off when it hits video. It is also going to spawn all manner of quotes. Of course, my excitement over the Bubba Ho-Tep adventure, which also involved chatting in #firefly from a Seattle sidewalk, was tempered a bit after reading about your moviegoing schedule. Once Upon A Time In Mexico, To Live And Die In LA, and Beyond Reanimator? Once again I must bow to you. You are still the queen. I will never be able to catch up with you. Also, I just saw the preview for Smallville. Wow, that looks really good. Just a couple more weeks. Finally, a big hallo to Silke. I am assuming that you are unable to post because you are so caught up in the adventures of Hiro and Y.T. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it. And I hope you are feeling better. Everyone at #firefly sends their best wishes. Now it is time to nap.

Lessons Learned and Re-Learned

Words mean things. That's one of the many credos by which I live. I'm much less apt than most to forgive people for 'just talking' because I feel that people should stand by what they say, back it to the hilt... if necessary, live and die by what you say because it should be what you believe. There's been a recent fracas over at fireflyfans.net, part of larger dustup as the main Firefly board on the fox website got closed and a whole host of people flooded over to the FFF site as their new home. The locals responded as most any group of people do when a larger new tribe moves in, defending their turf against invasion. Words were exchanged, feelings were hurt on all sides, and there's bitterness aplenty for everyone to wallow in. I've heard from people on both sides of the issue, and nobody is happy about how matters developed. On the one hand, I didn't want my current home base on the net flooded with tons of new people... that sort of event has driven me out of more than one place because the law of the lowest common denominator tends to kick in and the level of discourse drops like a rock. On the other hand, if I'd been over on the fox board when it was shut down, I probably would have transitioned over to the FFF site as a natural progression. It's too bad I missed the show, because I feel like I might have had something to contribute to the whole affair, perhaps to ameliorate the inevitable friction. Or maybe I'm just flattering myself. (But Jesus Fucking Christ, people, it's just a website, it's just a TV show, let's not take this shit too seriously, okay?) In the backdrop of that larger issue, a much more singular argument occurred, involving a person I have a well-known antipathy for. I saw it coming, I talked on it whenever his name came up, and frankly undoubtedly contributed to the overall nastiness of it when it came down, albeit indirectly since I wasn't there. My first thought was something along the lines of "Sayonara, you worthless piece of shit. Don't let the door hit you on the way out." That's the best answer, think it, drop it, leave it alone. But frankly, he had pissed me off severely on a prior occasion, and I'll admit to a strong personal prejuidice because I've seen people just like him before, seen the problems, disruptions and misery they cause. So I wanted to take a shot. When the excuse came, I took it. It wasn't my best example of verbal assassination ever, not by a long stretch. But it was halfway decent, and drew accolades from the rest of the clique. (And let's be honest, what we have is a clique. It's a perfectly natural progression in social organization, unfortunately prone to attacking outsiders and exiled former members. In the past I've not been entirely comfortable with some of the business that's gone on in this group, and even registered somewhat mild protests. That, I do believe, was a mistake. Above all else, you should never be afraid to tell your friends when you believe an injustice is being done. To not do so is one of the most common forms of human cowardice, and the auspice under which some of the worst crimes are committed.) In this case, though, I was fully for kicking him when he was down, more than that I was likely the most vehement proponent of doing so. In my adult life, starting allegedly around the age of sixteen, I've tended to view myself as a blunt-force instrument crafted for the purpose of protecting the people I care for and the things I believe in. Peace and love are great, noble things, but oftentimes the only answer is to confront the situation head on and do your best to take care of business. I have few regrets in life, mostly concerning missing out on more normal aspects of life while I was busy playing Don Quixote and tilting at every windmill in sight, but I believe that I've done fairly well at this self-appointed task of mine. Further than that, I believe it's a necessary job and that somebody has to do it. So when this individual essentially launched what I regard as crude, unwarranted attacks on my friends, my instinct was to take him down, hard. Hurt him badly enough that he wouldn't bother mi familia again. I don't regret that. But tonight I got a reminder on principles that I espouse, and like many people I occasionally fall down badly on practicing what I preach. Between myself and this person, we share a mutual friend. This friend of ours is a fellow that I've only known for a scant few months (but as net-time goes, that's a long time.) I took a natural liking to him early on, because we have a lot in common in terms of mindset and personality. I knew that my attack on my 'adversary' as it were would upset him, but I regarded that as an acceptable result if I achieved the effect I was aiming for. Naturally, this friend of mine stepped in to mediate. Okay, fine, I took my shot, I'm willing to back off. My 'adversary' fired a return shot, and I was quite ready to offer a short, snippy retort and walk away for good, when our friend dropped another post into the mix. Now this friend of mine is a very action-oriented fellow, a freewheeling chaotic sort of individual, possessed of depths that are easily overlooked if you don't pay attention. His offering was a rather touching and utterly out-of-character reference to Ghandi, as follows... ... life persists in the midst of destruction and therefore there must be a higher law than that of destruction. Only under that law would a well-ordered society be intelligible and life worth living. And if that is the law of life, we have to work it out in daily life. Whenever there are jars, wherever you are confronted with an opponent conquer him with love. In this crude manner I have worked it out in my life. That does not mean that all my difficulties are solved. Only I have found that this law of love has answered as the law of destruction has never done. - Gandhi As I essentially stated above, I don't believe in pacifism. "What if we had a war and only one side came?" as it were. (Ghandi was a piss-poor pacifist as well, registering no public objections to the militarization over Kashmir, and by many indications chose non-violent protest because it was the most workable system to bring about the social change in those circumstances. But what the hell, he got the job done, and it is better to resolve matters as often as possible without a lot of running about and shooting.) What my friend reminded me of is that there are essentially two good outcomes to a fight. One is, as I said, you put the other side down so hard they don't want to think about coming back at you. The preferable outcome, however, is to not have the fight at all. If you do choose your battle, make sure it's over something worthwhile, something beyond your petty feelings. If in defense of your beliefs, your family, your values, fight hard and with no regrets. But when given the choice and given the chance, just walk the hell away. Live and let goddamn live, even when you feel that the person in question is every bit deserving of a good hard smashing. So many problems in life can be handled with a simple usage of common courtesy. Oftentimes that can be the hardest thing to do, but for my part I believe in a life of virtue and rising above the status of the cro-magnon and clubbing my neighbors over the pettiest of squabbles. I may not love everybody, or for that matter most people in general, but I can keep moving on with my life and letting them live theirs. My friend was right, ultimately I was wrong, and for everyone involved, this is my mea culpa. I'm not going to forgive and forget, but I will move on. The next time I'm tempted to do what has been described as my "William Tell impersonation through the side of (insert targeted uncivilized slob here)'s skull." I'll bear this lesson in mind.

I had a long, beautiful post I'd half-typed up, listing all the places I'd gone, explaining my computer malfunctions, greeting Cathie, you name it. Then this stupid Internet Explorer on the laptop betrayed me. So we'll skip the paragraph of travelogue and the books I read while out. Believe me, most of the places I went, ya'll wouldn't have wanted to see. (North Bergen New Jersey only shines in comparison to its next-door neighbor, the belly of the beast itself, New York City.) Greetings Cathie. It's a pleasure to meet you. Dave has spoken kindly of you at times in the past, and I'd wager that on that he was speaking far more truthfully than when he speaks kindly of me. ("When's Archer coming back?" Yeah. That's so they can hide the fine silverware and catch all their calls with the answering machine. I know how it is.) (Above is a feeble attempt at humor. Can't wait to get the gorram computers and wiring fixed so I can get back and be amused and enlightened by the sterling company of the #firefly crew.) Which brings me to my computer problems. Cue Dave. "I have no idea how your computers work or how you get online at all." We do believe we finally have the answer as to why my systems fail regularly. It's been an ongoing problem since I got my first for-real home system about... eight years ago now, through a plethora of motherboards, processors, cards and peripherals, and OS'. Twenty-year-old cheapo aluminum wiring+computers equals constant system dysfunction. The partial remedy thus far has been to purchase a UPS with AVR (I love abbreviations) but that didn't entirely do the trick. So right now I'm on the laptop, and next week I'm going to play electrician by ripping all the wiring in the bedroom out and replacing it, along with adding at least one new breaker and possibly two, and probably a half-dozen outlets to finally fully support this growing electronic monstrosity of mine. Aside to Dave: My nickname was actually Sparky once upon a time, back in my National Electrical Code class in college. See, I kinda short a panel and blew sparks everywhere, and people were wryly amused. So the next day, in my typical grandiose style, I wired up another one and loudly proclaimed to the room "I'm done wiring this in! Who wants to hold the grounding wire as a show of faith?" Hit the switch, snap-crackle-pop, sparks everywhere, and three people started yelling 'SPARKY!' Never lived that one down with those folks, even though a guy with field experience matched my total of blown panels by the end of the year. (Three, if you were wondering.) He just didn't do it in such a... cheerfully extravagant manner. So he went on his sad little un-nicknamed way, and I decided that possibly electrical engineering was not the career for me. When I first got into this, I was wondering if I'd be able to come up with anything to say. Now I'm writing essays. Damn you, Dave. This is all your fault. You owe me a six-pack of Hornsby's Hard Apple Cider, and I want it yesterday. Oh, and Silke... you should try out for the show. 125,000 EUR would go a long way toward kicking off our grand American tour in style. (And remember, we all loved you before you got the money.)

Still here! And other things to brag about ;)

Howdy! I got it to say Shempcat by making that my first name, though I may have changed it back to Cathie Last time I was around...we'll see once I post this, eh. I'm still catching movies! I can't wait to see Bubba Ho Tep, I Bruce doesn't cancel, though I haven't seen anything about it on his site. I can't wait to see this movie again! In the mean time there's a the ManiaFest film festival here in Santa Monica. Yesterday was the first day, I am just catching the evening flicks, but so far I saw this Anime called Junkers Come Here. It's a sweet movie about a little girl who has a dog named Junkers, he talks to her and is her only firend. She has to deal with the possiblity of her parents getting a divorce. (it made me cry!) The other movie I saw last night was Beyond Reanimator! Yup a brand new Animator Movie is here! It was a lot of fun. Jeffery Combs spoke after the film along with a writer and another actor from the film. It was filmed in Spain! It was fun stuff. I'll rattle on about the rest of the festival as I attend flicks. About Jake 2.0 I have to say I've enjoyed the show, I actually like Jake, I think it's cause I loved that guy in the show Oddysee 5. I really wish that show got picked up again! Oh Why wasn't it picked up!!?? It was a show with Peter Weller, Buckaroo himself!!!! I'm anxiously awaiting SMALLVILLE though, I can't wait for that one! So, that's things on my end, just work and movies and looking for more movies. And speaking of them let me just say I didn't like Cabin Fever AT ALL! Yuck! Once Upon A Time In Mexico was action packed fun, and catching a Midnight flick of To Live and Die In L.A. was a great fun too. Ok back to work for me! Ciao :)

sunshine, starbucks, snow crash. and who wants to be a millionaire anyway

sunshine. in germany. at that time of the year?! even 86F! i was totally confused on my way to the first starbucks in muenster two days ago. lucky for me the way is not very long (for muenster is not that big) and there was not much time to be confused before i went inside a building with air condition. i had forgotten how expensive starbucks is! unfortunately i had not thought of bringing my tim horton's mug - i wanted to ask for a free refill and see what the reactions were - but i highly doubt anyone of the students who work there knew tim or a free refill anyway. but at least i got a bonus-card, so if i ever ordered 7 coffees there, the 8th will be for free. yay. i can hardly wait. on my way back home i went into the local book store and ordered snow crash. in german, that was cheaper than the english edition. i will blog about what i think of it as soon as i am finished. dave's almost constantly talking about this book finally hooked me. last weekend i watched the german "who wants to be a millionaire" and the 125,000 EUR (!!) question was how many stripes the us-flag has. why does noone ask me this question and give me 125,000 EUR for answering it correclty? the twist-top-question really seems to bother you, dave, interestingly much for someone who does not drink beer anyway :o) i really think it only has something to do with the coolness-factor. it is a sport to be able to open beerbottles with everything availabe: a lighter is a part of the basic equipment, everyone can do that. but whatever else can be found is tried to be used: forks, keys, other bottles which are still closed, any sharp edge. plus it is a popular & easy way for a woman to get in contact with someone at a party - the seemingly helpless "i cannot open the bottle, can you help?"-phrase is almost a classic. guys should not do it though, the coolness-factor would be totally spoiled. and yes, i know it is weird ;o) after doing a little research on the internet i know now what a "pop top" is and can assure you, that we do have them. for at least 3 years. just kidding :o) a nice weekend to all of you, and try to be good. if possible.

Hot Asian Assassin's, A Soul Sucking Mummy, And The Gay Pirate Bruce Lee

So I spent my Saturday afternoon over in the U-District seeing So Close, a very interesting movie. On the whole it is a really well made movie, with a good story. It looks incredible, with a lot of nice camerawork. And you can never go wrong pointing a camera at Shu Qi. The one thing I would point out to those considering watching it is the very asian fight scenes. These girls do things that defy physics, and take a whole lot of punishment while doing them. I don't have a problem with it, so I really enjoyed the movie. I also picked up tickets to next weekends Seattle premiere of Bubba Ho-Tep. Unfortunately, Bruce Campbell had to cancel his appearance for the opening due to a 'scheduling conflict'. So, our premiere won't be as cool as yours was Shempy, but it is still a new Bruce movie, and that is something to look forward to. I believe today and tomorrow are bringing Silke and Josh back home to us. Let me be the first to welcome you both back. We have missed you. Everyone in #firefly is very anxious to talk to Josh. Not a day goes by that I don't read a 'When's Archer going to be back anyway?" post. So welcome home to both of you, and now blog something would ya? I have been following the odd dialogue between Wil at The Rubble and Sarah at Moralcalculus with a remote interest. After reading the latest entries, all I can say is a big ol' 'Huh?' I am just not following that post Wil. Feel free to ignore this if you don't want to get involved with Annie's internet friends, because I certainly count myself in that camp. I just don't get why you would write that large a group of people off simply for that reason. Me, yeah write me off. We would probably clash. I don't see you having long discussions with me over the gay pirate Bruce Lee, or the merits of Akira Fubuki versus Sally Yoshino. There are those in the friends of Annie camp that are most definately an intellectual match for you. You can turn your back on the idea (...it's Wil's per rog a tive...), but I think you would be writing off a whole lot of really amazing people. The new television season is making it's start slowly. I plan on watching the premiere of Everwood tonight. It might be a little touchy feely for some, but on occasion that works for me.

The Future Of File Sharing

There has certainly been a lot of news lately about file sharing. The riaa and the mpaa (just like fox, they don't deserve capitalization) have decided that the answer is to threaten and sue. This seems to be a bit of an odd business strategy to me. But hey, these are the geniuses that brought you milli vanilli and the stupids, so who am i to argue. That is a different point for a differnt time however, now I want to focus on where file sharing is headed. I see two basic ideas that I believe will continue to grow as we move along. First is what I would refer to as the cloaking apps. A good example of this idea is Earthstation 5. I will not bore you with all the technical details, you can go to their website for that. The long and the short of it is that everything is routed through servers in other countries. Countries where the riaa and mpaa have no power. You see, the problem with kazaa, and programs like them, is that when someone is getting a file from you, they can quite easily see your ip address. Once they see that, you are one terse lettere away from your provider shutting you down. The idea with the cloaking services is that no one sees anyone else's ip address. You will never know where you are sending files, or where they are coming from. This is a good idea, with a couple caveats. One, you have to trust the people that make the program. Are you sure that they are not up to no good? And two, how good is their tech? Is there a way that the iraa or mpaa could somehow hack the server and trace back to you? Things to consider if you are going to give cloaking programs a try. The other file sharing idea that I already see becoming active is what I am going to call media cells. These are close groups of people that all know and trust each other. If you know who a person is and are positive that no harm can come to you from sending and receiving files with them there are a myriad of ways to go about this on the internet. You may think that a small group of friends is not going to have a big enough assortment of files, be it music, movies, softwares, or whatever. True, but cells really gain steam when they start to cross over. For example, I just happen to know a crazy group of browncoats over at #firefly. There are a bunch of guys and gals there that I would be more than happy to trade a file or two with, not that I ever have. Apart from that, I know a guy named SP, and have known him for a long time. I also would have no trouble trading with him. Now, through me SP gains access to the browncoat media machine, even though he will never know who any of them are or where they are from. And through SP, I gain access to his strange world of friends. Following the logic, the browncoats now all have access to SP world through me. And I gain access to untold groups through each of them. Yet none of us ever sends a file to anyone we don't know. Anyway...is anyone going to see Once Upon A Time In Mexico? I was thinking of seeing a matinee Saturday or Sunday. I was flipping throught the entertainment section this morninng and noticed that William Arnold of the PI gave it a D. That is a very good sign. Willy has no taste in movies. Kind of curious to see Matchstick Mern and Cabin Fever too. And Shempcat, Bubba Ho-Tep is playing next Friday. I am going over to get tickets this weekend. Can't wait. Now, I should get to work.

Jealous again...

Shemp, ya make me jealous. Seeing Mallrats on the big screen, AND hearing a Kevin Smith Q&A. Sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday night. It seems that you inspired Rachel @ moralcalculus to blog about converse as well. The Shempcat fanbase is growing already. Just like I knew it would. On a side note to the blogging, I noticed that you switched your posted by tag to shempcat. How did you manage that? Blogger seems to have decided to start calling Annie @ The Rubble Meredith. It is rather an odd occurrence. I couldn't find a setting to change it. If you know, clue us in. Have a safe trip Silke, and enjoy the time with your family. I am still wondering how it is Germany hasn't discovered the twist top. It's not like it is secret military aviation technology, or the Windows source code. It's a twist top. Odd. Next you'll tell me that you don't have the pop top soup cans or zip lock tortilla bags. Anyone else try and watch Jake 2.0? I say try because it really didn't hold my interest. The main problem I have is the lead actor. This guy is just not interesting. If you want an example of what Jake should be like, look to Vincent Ventresca from The Invisible Man. Now that guy I will watch. He has actually had three series now that I really enjoyed, Invisible Man, Prey, and Medicine Ball. And if you watch Friends, you had to enjoy him as Fun Bobby. Odd trivia, before they were together on Friends, Ventresca guested on another David Schwimmer show. Anyone remember Monty?...Anyone?...Yeah...didn't think so. I am such a TV dork. It is nice to see the new season starting, even if it is without Firefly. Gorram fox. I am looking forward to tonights premiere of What I Like About You tonight on the WB. It's no Seinfeld, but still pretty funny. Run Of The House premieres after What I Like About You for those that don't have anything to watch yet. Speaking of Firefly...I was asked to extend an invitation to you Shemp. All the folks in #firefly would like to meet you. So, if you are ever goofing on the internet and have a few spare moments, just connect to etherstorm.net and join #firefly. They're nice people, for the most part. If you need anymore info on connecting, Maguinan wrote a nice little guide that you can find on the #firefly site. It's on the about page. Am I the only one that has heard the song Shuffle It All by Izzy Stradlin and the Juju Hounds? Geez, I thought that was a bigger hit than it was apparently. Well, now I need to get to work. Be groovy. Dave

on the road

I was somehow forced to visit my grandparents and mom who are on hoilday in the southern part of Germany for a few days, since there is no term at university right now - and wanted to say goodbye, you all take care and be safe :o) these 700 kms do need a good preparation. mine is having music, an atlas and my cell with me. on the way back to muenster again i will pass my hometown and visit my dad, he insisted on giving us beer. he is brewer and therefor our garage usually looks more like a store for beverages. i can remember that one time my dad could not park the car in it because of all the cases. because my brother still lives in our hometown he can get beer everytime he wants to and my dad feels bad that i do not have that opportunity. so everytime i am back in cologne or someone from back home visits me here, i get cases and cases of beer to make up for all the times tom was in our garage. it most probably looks as if we have a major party going on in our apartment for 3 years, with a party crowd that keeps yelling for more beer. and because david was so confused and doubting, here comes a background information on german beer in bottles: it does not have twist-tops. and cool germans open bottles with lighters ;o) i better get going now, have a nice week -- und tschuess :o)

Hey again and other things

THANKS for the welcome. It's good to be here and I'm looking forward to rambling when I can. Looks like we've got a fun group of peeps here. I just wanted to share about some of my weekend and comment on what I've read here. Dave, Converse are the best, it's about the only type of shoe I wear. I have a pair of Flame style Converse in low and high top that I wear most these days. I have worn down my fair share of converse and had a yellow pair specifically for my college graduation few years back. Thank God for Converse! And I'm glad to read you liked Whale Rider, it's on my to see list. I've heard so many great things. My movie adventure this weekend was watching Mallrats at midnight this past friday. Kevin Smith even spoke before and after the film. Boy does he just talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk and talk! I'm not kidding. I've seen him at comic convention pannels before, but this was just non stop talk talk talk. And I don't think I really learned anything new about him and his projects. Though he really raved about recently interviewing Tom Cruise, who he is now calling T.C. And when it was 3:15AM I had to leave, it didn't seem like he was going to stop anytime soon. But Anyways, it was great to see Mallrats on the big screen, i had only seen it on video before. It's a fun flick! The Crowd there was huge, a sell out crowd with 400+ people. Next week's midnight is To Live and Die In L.A. I'm pretty sure I'll go, gotta enjoy 80's cinema on the big screen! Yup! So, that is my rambling adventure! Until the next one Shempcat out!

w00t, and junk

Just a sarahesque thoughts on stuff entry. First, can I just give a big ass thumbs up to huge apartment complexes. I parked across the street from one a few minutes ago and popped the top on the laptop. I was presented with 6 wireless networks to choose from. And 2 of them didn't even require passwords. w00t, as the kids say. That particular complex is only a mile from work, which gives me a new place to eat lunch. Moving on. What is up with shoes, sneakers to be specific. I take my sneakers pretty seriously. Once I have a good pair goin, I will wear them until they beg to be put out of their misery. My Answer Flatfoots have been beggin for a month or so, after 5 years of good service. So, yesterday I hit the outlet mall looking for a deal on some new skids. First stop was nike. What a giant pile of suck that place is. Just about every shoe in there is just hideous. The few pairs that didn't look like hell, of course, don't come in anything bigger than a 10. 10? I thought humans were getting bigger. Jeez. Walking over to the Adidas store I found the Samba. I dig that shoe. Nice and black with the three white Adidas stripes. If only I wore an 11. Bastards. The skate shop had a nice selection of Vans and DC shoes in sizes all the way up to 16. Dig them with the supa sizes. Unfortunately they didn't have the style I wanted. To cut what may be an already too long story short, I ended up getting a nice set of low top Converse All Stars. In a 13. Oh, I am at the theatere about to see Whale Rider by the way. Lucia Lucia preview looks interesting. Is it bad edicut to type a blog entry in the theater during the previews? Am I going to go to the special hell? That's ok, I already know the language. Julia Roberts as a teacher at an all girl school with Maggie Gyllenhall, Kirsten Dunst, Julia Styles, and the cute girl from Ed. Mona Lisa Smile. Looks a little sappy, but I'll like it in spite of the sap I am sure. I'm a sucker for Julia. Heh, the nice lady sitting next to me likes the ibook. But now it is time for the movie to start, so I will have to finish this later. Sitting in the Pizza Haven waiting for an order. Holy smokes! Whale Rider is a fantastic movie. It is funny, intriguing, and heartwarming, all at once. The performances are terrific. And you just can't beat the coast of New Zealand for splendid visuals. I can't believe this is Keisha Castle-Hughes first movie. She is amazing. She actually made me cry. And I am a big surly cynical bastard. It takes work to render a tear from these eyes. Little gems like this keep me going back to the theater. The T3's, X2's and and Die Hard 4's (it's coming) have their place. But a really good small movie like this, chock full of unknowns, is always a little more special. I urge you all to see it. It may take a little work to find, but your toils will be rewarded greatly. Odd trivia - Whale Rider is a Germany / New Zeland production. Order up, nice service from a cute redhead. w00t indeed. What is the deal with those stupid 7up commercials. dnL? Really? dnL? I realize that they have a craptastic product that must be a bitch to sell, but is dnL really the best they can do? Maybe take the cash that was spent on the lame ass leprechaun and have the r&d guys figure out how to get rid of that sick ass aftertaste. Just a thought. Note to Rachel@moralcalculus. I saw your little contribution to the Josh debate. Just so you know, our Josh is out delivering consumer goods, making the world a better place for you and yours. And while your Josh may be able to out run our Josh, any kicking of ass will move in a west to east direction. We supasized when we got our Josh. Speaking of things @moralcalculus. Miss Sarah just posted another of her browncoat chronicles at fireflyfans.net. This latest installment features the debut two new characters. One based on myself, and the interesting one based on philomel. These things are always quite the conundrum for me. On the one hand, they fall right in line with my whole multi-media junkie thing. I just eat the stuff up. Already anxious for the next one as soon as I finish the new one. On the other hand, they make it even harder to write anything myself. My junk just doesn't seem to measure up. W00T! Check out the fancy redesign at Kaythryn's site. She is the coolest. Dave

welcome cathie :o)

long time no read from me, and i am sorry about that, but here i am again - ready to blog like hell! yay! first of all: welcome, cathie :o) it is so nice to you have on board, since someone we both know told me so much about how nice you are and how much we will all appreciate having you here. i am looking forward to your thoughts and opinions you will share with us here :o) it is saturday night (well, okay, my morning) and one good thing that happened today was the german basketball team who won the game vs latvia in sweden - the european championship is taking place there right now. go dirk, go dirk! i wanted to blog something else i already emailed dave but thought it was too great to keep between the two of us. i am introducing (well, the exact phrase would be: forcing to watch) a good friend of mine to firefly lately, and a few days ago when we were watching "die hard I" (and you can all be thankful i am not going to complain about the superbad and unprofessional german from hans gruber and his crew, really!) we were sitting on my friend's couch and my bag which was lying next to me fell on the floor. my friend looked at the bag, looked at me, pointed at the bag, raised one eyebrow and asked: "did it just go crazy and fall alseep?" i love her muchly, and i think her subconscious is already hooked with firefly. there will be no escape. and with this i will leave you all to sit and ponder dave's blog :o)

Multi-media Junkie

I am a multi-media junkie. TV, movies, books, cd's, records, the internet, magazines, radio...whatever the medium...something is almost always being shot into my intellectual veins in one form or another. I do take four or five hours off from the information overload each night to nap, but even then my subconscious is organizing away, filing all that information for future refernce. Or, on occasion, twisting it into a strange dream featuring remnants of the recent input blended into a freakish tale that makes sense while sleeping, but is incomprehensible when awake. Now, like every good junkie, I have turned to pushing my junk onto others. Occasionally I get the impression that it annoys people, often it seems that they think I am just downright weird, but every once in a while someone decides to try a little bit of what I'm sellin'. I am pleased to say that in the general, I have a mostly satisfied clientelle. So, with that in mind, and this blog just a point and click away, I decided to list some of my personal favorites that you may have missed. Check this stuff out when you get the chance. TV Firefly (well duh, who do you think you're talking to) Coupling (UK version) Maximum Bob (If you find it, email me post haste) MOVIES Cold Blooded (Jason Priestly. Yes, that Jason Priestly) The Red Violin (Samuel Jackson) Running Time (Bruce Campbell) MUSIC Luscious Jackson - Electric Honey PJ Shapiro - I Know What You're Made Of Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff BOOKS Snowcrash - Neal Stephenson A Song Of Ice And Fire - George R R Martin If Chins Could Kill - Bruce Campbell In other blogging news: Welcome to The Carnage Shempcat!! It is great to have you posting here. Yup. Just in time for the new fall season of TV too. Groovy! And don't worry about the rambling. Speaking from experience, a rambling Shempcat is a fun and interesting read. Feel free to make the place your own. Grrrrr, took one on the chin from Sarah at moralcalculus today. Why don't we update The Carnage more? I was going to go with a snarky, quality versus quantity thing, but I'll leave that one for Annie to use. Truth be told, it's only been two weeks. Give us a chance to get our sea legs under us. Plus, the superior Josh is on the road, so we are down a man. Odd thought from the chat: Is it wrong to fantasize about girls in panties with curling brooms? Some people juggle geese ya know. And if you think that sounds odd, you really should have read the rest of that conversation. I'll leave you with that to ponder...while you download your Firefly. Dave

Shempcat sayin' Howdy

Well my good firend Dave who I actually know as RFGeko invited me to join the ranks of the blogger team here at Carnage. I couldn't resist his request/plea. ;) I'm still catching up on reading what's going on but I wanted to say Hi and Hello! I haven't really done this before so excuse any future rambling, I tend to rattle on given the chance. But here's a little about me, Shempcat, also known as Cathie (IE no Y). I live in Southern California, and I love Movies, collect comic books and toys and play video games. Yup, and I say Yup a lot, I picked up on that with the movie Land Before Time. "YUP, YUP, YUP" So that's me, and talk to you all again soon! :)
